The New York Giants are inching closer to camp season, with mandatory minicamp slated for June 17–19 and training camp following in late July.
On WFAN’s “Big Blue Kickoff Live” podcast, beat reporter Paul Dottino pointed to an intriguing battle in the secondary between 2022 third-round pick Cor’Dale Flott and 2023 sixth-rounder Tre Hawkins.
Dottino made it clear: both corners are best suited for boundary roles—not the slot. “I don’t like Flott in the slot,” he said. “He’s more comfortable outside, using the sideline to his advantage.”
While Flott currently holds the edge, Dottino cautioned that injuries could change that quickly. “If Flott can’t stay healthy and prove himself, Hawkins could absolutely leapfrog him on the depth chart.”
Hawkins has flashed during OTAs, including an interception off rookie QB Jaxson Dart. On the other hand, Flott was reportedly beaten deep by Darius Slayton on a Russell Wilson “moon ball,” per The Athletic’s Dan Duggan.
For now, Flott is getting first-team reps behind Deonte Banks, while Hawkins works with the second team. Dottino acknowledged Hawkins was “thrown into the deep end” as a rookie but believes his raw tools still show promise.
As it stands, the Giants’ cornerback depth chart features Banks and free-agent addition Paulson Adebo as projected starters, with rookie Dru Phillips likely manning the slot. Flott, Hawkins, and Art Green are in the mix for CB4, while Nic Jones is emerging as the primary backup slot corner. Others like Korie Black, Dee Williams, TJ Moore, and O’Donnell Fortune will look to prove themselves in camp to stay on the roster.
