The Minnesota Vikings have reached an agreement with former Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Tim Jones, the team announced on Tuesday. This move adds depth to the Vikings’ roster, bringing in a veteran with experience in both offense and special teams.
Jones spent the last four seasons with the Jaguars after joining as an undrafted free agent from Southern Miss in 2021. He spent his rookie year on the practice squad but went on to appear in all 53 of Jacksonville’s games over the next three years, including playoff games, playing 657 snaps as a receiver and 668 snaps on special teams.
Standing at 6’1″ and weighing 200 pounds, Jones has caught 17 passes for 154 yards in his career. He has only run routes on about half of his offensive snaps, often being utilized as a run blocker. On special teams, he played 299 snaps last season, ranking third among Jacksonville players.
With the loss of Trent Sherfield to the Broncos in free agency, the Vikings were in need of some veteran receiver depth. Jones is also expected to help fill the void on special teams, alongside recent additions Tavierre Thomas and Eric Wilson.
This move doesn’t rule out the Vikings pursuing Rondale Moore, who visited the team last Friday. Although both are wide receivers, Moore and Jones offer very different skill sets. Moore visited the Bears on Monday and is reportedly considering his options.
The Vikings’ current wide receiver depth chart looks like this:
- Justin Jefferson
- Jordan Addison
- Jalen Nailor
- Tim Jones
- Lucky Jackson
- Thayer Thomas
- Jeshaun Jones
While Jones is unlikely to secure the No. 4 receiver spot heading into training camp, his special teams experience gives him a chance to make the 53-man roster, likely as the WR5 or WR6. Jones hasn’t been a major contributor to an offense since his junior year at Southern Miss in 2019, when he recorded 73 receptions for 902 yards.
