Rangers Shake Up Bullpen: Two New Arms Activated as Slumping Prospect Gets the Hook

Rangers Bolster Pitching Staff, Option Kumar Rocker to Triple-A

The Texas Rangers were among the most active teams at this year’s trade deadline, adding more firepower to an already strong pitching staff. Riding a hot streak and climbing into the thick of the AL Wild Card race, Texas approached the deadline as clear buyers.

While many expected the Rangers to target a power bat to spark their inconsistent offense, they instead made a splash by acquiring veteran starter Merrill Kelly from the Arizona Diamondbacks. The experienced right-hander strengthens what has already been one of the most reliable starting rotations in the league.

In addition to Kelly, the Rangers addressed their bullpen by picking up lefty Danny Coulombe and right-hander Phil Maton—two key arms who are now active and ready to contribute in the team’s upcoming series against the Seattle Mariners.

To make room on the roster, Texas optioned top pitching prospect Kumar Rocker to Triple-A. Though highly regarded within the organization, the 24-year-old has struggled at the Major League level this season, posting a 4-5 record with a 5.74 ERA. With the rotation now fully loaded, Rocker became the odd man out for now.

Despite his recent struggles, the Rangers remain optimistic about Rocker’s long-term potential and see him as an important part of their future.

With new bullpen depth and a crucial series ahead against a division rival, the Rangers are making a strong push toward the postseason.
