Reds Eye Potential Outfield Upgrade as Marlins Shop Dane Myers
The Cincinnati Reds could have a prime opportunity to strengthen their outfield at the upcoming MLB trade deadline. According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Miami Marlins are actively making outfielder Dane Myers available.
Myers is a standout defender in center field, posting 4 Defensive Runs Saved (DRS) and 4 Outs Above Average (OAA) this season. While current Reds outfielders like Will Benson, Jake Fraley, and Austin Hays are solid defensively, none match Myers’ elite glove work.
He also addresses one of Cincinnati’s biggest weaknesses: hitting left-handed pitching. Myers has crushed lefties this year, boasting a .324/.385/.493 slash line and a 146 wRC+ against them. His presence in the lineup would allow manager Terry Francona to better deploy infielders like Noelvi Marte and Santiago Espinal without pushing them into unfamiliar outfield roles.
Trade Deadline Buzz: Marlins Willing to Deal Dane Myers
Myers is under team control through 2029, which raises his trade value. However, at 29 years old, Miami is unlikely to demand an elite prospect package in return. Rosenthal notes the Marlins aren’t eager to move him, but the emergence of top prospect Jakob Marsee gives them flexibility.
The Marlins are in clear rebuild mode, while the Reds have a deep farm system that could tempt Miami’s front office. Though Cincinnati has been hesitant to part with top-tier prospects like Sal Stewart and Chase Burns, they may be willing to offer up Edwin Arroyo, Adam Serwinowski, or even Chase Petty as part of a deal.
The Reds narrowly avoided being swept by the Nationals earlier this week, and with the Padres dropping two of three to Miami, Cincinnati remains just 2.5 games out of the final NL Wild Card spot. Acquiring Myers — potentially alongside bullpen reinforcements — could give the Reds a major push in the postseason race.
