Reds Get Major Boost as Hunter Greene Returns — Plus a $2.75M Draft Surprise!

Hunter Greene Begins Rehab Assignment; Reds Ink Second-Round Pick Aaron Watson

Cincinnati Reds right-hander Hunter Greene took a key step in his return from a groin injury, making his first rehab start Wednesday afternoon. The 2024 All-Star, who’s been sidelined for over two months, pitched two innings for the ACL Reds in Arizona during a road matchup against the Brewers’ complex league squad.

Greene looked sharp in his limited outing. He worked around a first-inning error and a second-inning walk without allowing a hit. He struck out four of the seven batters he faced, throwing 28 pitches—16 for strikes, including seven swinging strikes.

While the performance was encouraging, the bigger focus for Greene and the Reds will be how he physically responds in the coming days. Today’s outing was originally scheduled for two weeks ago but was delayed due to lingering discomfort, so just getting back on the mound marks a positive milestone.

If all goes well during recovery, Greene is expected to make his next rehab appearance with the Triple-A Louisville Bats, potentially lining him up to pitch again on Tuesday (as Triple-A teams are off on Mondays).

Reds Sign Second-Rounder Aaron Watson

In other news, the Reds announced the signing of second-round draft pick Aaron Watson. The 18-year-old right-hander from Jacksonville agreed to terms on Wednesday afternoon, landing a $2.75 million signing bonus—well above slot value.

Watson’s deal uses up most of the bonus pool flexibility the Reds had left after signing several of their other draft selections. The high school pitcher is seen as one of the more projectable arms from the 2025 draft class.
