Reds Land Miguel Andujar in Deadline Deal with Oakland
Just before the MLB trade deadline closed, the Cincinnati Reds made a late move by acquiring veteran Miguel Andujar from the Oakland Athletics.
As reported by team insider Charlie Goldsmith, the Reds added the right-handed slugger on Thursday. “The Reds have traded for Miguel Andujar. In 45 plate appearances, he’s posted a 1.036 OPS against left-handed pitchers. Last season, he had a .995 OPS against them,” Goldsmith said.
Andujar brings offensive firepower to Cincinnati’s lineup, especially as a platoon option versus left-handed pitching. However, his defensive abilities at third base and left field remain a weak spot.
The 29-year-old began his MLB career with the New York Yankees in 2017 and has since spent time with the Pirates and Athletics before landing in Cincinnati.
Why the Move Matters
The addition of Andujar gives the Reds another experienced bat with strong splits against lefties. For his career, Andujar owns a .277 average with 437 hits, 206 RBIs, and 49 home runs. This season, he’s batting .298 with 65 hits, 27 RBIs, and six home runs.
The Reds, who have had limited playoff success in recent years—with just one postseason appearance since 2010—are looking to strengthen their roster for a potential Wild Card push. Their last notable playoff run came in 2012 when they reached the NLDS.
Now sitting at 57-52 and third in the NL Central—6.5 games behind the Cubs and 7.5 back of the Brewers—Cincinnati hopes Andujar can help spark their offense down the stretch. They’ll look to build momentum in Game 2 of their series against the Braves on August 1 at 12:40 p.m. ET.
