While it’s unlikely that Chase Burns has thrown his final pitch for the Reds this season, his upcoming start against the Pirates could very well be his last in the 2025 rotation. The Reds haven’t confirmed their pitching plans for the weekend series in Pittsburgh, but with Nick Lodolo, Zack Littell, and Andrew Abbott already lined up to face the Cubs earlier in the week, it’s expected that Burns and Brady Singer will get the nod on the road.
However, Hunter Greene is closing in on his return. He just finished his second rehab outing on Sunday and is likely to make one more start in Triple-A Louisville before rejoining the Reds. When that happens, it’s almost certain that Greene will take Burns’ spot in the rotation.
Greene tossed 66 pitches over 3 1/3 innings against the Omaha Storm Chasers, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out seven. It’s clear that his recovery from a lingering groin injury is nearing the finish line. His return sets off a chain reaction that began with the Reds acquiring Zack Littell at the trade deadline. Littell is set to take Nick Martinez’s rotation spot and will debut Tuesday at Wrigley Field. Martinez, who excelled as a reliever last season, will slide back into a high-leverage bullpen role.
As for Burns, despite an impressive rookie campaign, he’s been on an innings limit all season. Once Greene is activated, Burns is expected to join Martinez in the bullpen. While he likely won’t bump Emilio Pagán or Tony Santillan from their late-inning roles, Burns’ high-velocity fastball and wipeout slider give the Reds another dynamic option out of the pen.
Burns’ rise to the majors has been rapid and remarkable, considering he was drafted just last year. He’s more than earned a spot in next season’s rotation, but for now, his contributions will come from the bullpen as the Reds gear up for a playoff push.
