Reports regarding Aaron Rodgers joining the Minnesota Vikings remain conflicting, leaving the team with a crucial question: If Rodgers doesn’t come to Minnesota, who will step in as the backup quarterback behind J.J. McCarthy this season? As the second week of free agency approaches, the pool of viable backup QB options for a Super Bowl-contending team is shrinking.
One possible option is Jameis Winston, known for his unique record as the only quarterback in NFL history to throw for 30 touchdowns and 30 interceptions in a single season, a feat he accomplished in 2019. That year, Winston led the league in passing attempts (626), yards (5,109), and interceptions (30), while also tossing 33 touchdowns. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers traded him to the New Orleans Saints after signing Tom Brady, and went on to win the Super Bowl.
Winston is often seen as reckless, but his strong arm and ability to make deep throws could make him a serious threat in the Vikings’ potent offense. Will Ragatz of Sports Illustrated included Winston among the top remaining options for the Vikings, but noted that his style may not be the ideal fit for Minnesota, both on and off the field.

Ragatz pointed out that Winston is a “gunslinger” in the mold of Nick Mullens, and while his personality has made him a fan favorite, his past includes multiple incidents of alleged sexual misconduct, with the most recent legal issue in 2016, which he settled that December.
The Vikings have already shown they can win with a turnover-prone, big-armed QB like Winston. Last season, Mullens, serving as the backup behind Sam Darnold, was limited due to Darnold’s health but had some notable moments when starting. Despite the team going 0-3 with Mullens as a starter in 2023, they kept games close, including an overtime loss to the Cincinnati Bengals and a narrow defeat to the Detroit Lions. Mullens recorded 1,306 yards, 7 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions in five appearances.
Meanwhile, Winston had a similar experience with the Cleveland Browns after Deshaun Watson’s season-ending injury in 2024. Starting seven games, Winston threw for over 2,100 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. His most impressive performances included 334 yards and 3 TDs in a win over the Baltimore Ravens, and 395 yards and 2 TDs in a loss to the Saints.
While Winston likely wouldn’t be the first choice for a playoff run, he could serve as a temporary solution if McCarthy were injured mid-season. His unpredictable nature could work for or against the Vikings, but he’s also capable of pulling off big wins in difficult situations. Winston was highly supportive of Watson in Cleveland, and his positive attitude and leadership could help McCarthy in his first year as a starter. This could be a factor in Minnesota’s decision on whether to bring him in.
