The South Carolina Gamecocks enjoyed a strong 2024 season, finishing with a solid 9-4 record overall and 5-3 in SEC play. Along the way, they secured some memorable victories, including impressive wins over No. 10 Texas A&M, No. 23 Missouri, and No. 21 Clemson. However, their season ended on a disappointing note with a 21-17 loss to the Illinois Fighting Illini in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl. Despite this setback, the Gamecocks’ overall success can be largely attributed to the stellar play of freshman quarterback LaNorris Sellers, who emerged as one of the breakout stars of the season. His remarkable performance didn’t go unnoticed, earning him the prestigious title of National Offensive Freshman of the Year from the Football Writers Association of America.
Sellers’ stats from his debut season were nothing short of impressive. He completed 196 of 299 passes for 2,534 yards, threw for 18 touchdowns, and posted just seven interceptions, achieving a passer efficiency rating of 151.9. Beyond his passing prowess, Sellers showcased his dual-threat capability, rushing for 674 yards and adding seven touchdowns on the ground. His all-around skill set made him one of the most exciting quarterbacks in college football and a key reason for South Carolina’s strong performance.
To ensure Sellers has the necessary support to continue his growth, South Carolina has focused on strengthening its offensive line, making key additions through the transfer portal. The Gamecocks welcomed four-star tackle Jaylen Browns and three-star interior linemen Rodney Newsom Jr. and Boaz Stanley, providing crucial reinforcements to protect their young quarterback and bolster their offensive attack.
After finishing No. 15 in the final College Football Playoff rankings for 2024, South Carolina’s future looks promising. If Sellers continues to develop and improve in his sophomore season, the Gamecocks could very well find themselves in contention for a spot in the expanded 12-team playoff field in 2025, making for an exciting year ahead. With a talented quarterback leading the charge and an upgraded offensive line, South Carolina has the potential to build on its success and take the next step toward becoming a playoff contender.
