TEAM-NEWS: Bills Announce Final Decision on James Cook Contract Talks

Buffalo Bills fans hoping for a contract extension for running back James Cook in the near future may be disappointed. With the team already working on extensions for players like Josh Allen, Khalil Shakir, Greg Rousseau, Terrel Bernard, and Christian Benford, Cook, who is entering the final year of his rookie contract in 2025, remains without a new deal.

It doesn’t seem like that will change anytime soon, as general manager Brandon Beane, speaking at the annual league meeting, indicated that the Bills won’t be making any more contract moves for now. “Once we got Benford done, I don’t see us doing any deals anytime soon,” Beane said. “We’re going to focus on the draft and getting our cap in order.

This doesn’t bode well for Cook’s hopes of securing a contract extension this offseason. However, Beane also noted that just because Cook isn’t signed now doesn’t mean a deal won’t be reached before he hits free agency next year.

“Just because we don’t have James signed today doesn’t mean next year we can’t get him done before he gets to free agency,” Beane said. For now, the Bills are prioritizing the draft and their salary cap, which currently stands at just $4.4 million in space.

With Beane also acknowledging that the team and Cook aren’t aligned on terms, it seems likely that any contract talks will be pushed to next offseason. Cook’s desire for a new deal this offseason appears unlikely to be fulfilled.
