TEAM-NEWS: Canadiens’ Shocking Collapse After Deadline Decision: Is Hughes’ Trust in the Team Already Fading?

Hughes showed confidence in his team this week by extending Jake Evans, a player most likely to be traded. However, he ultimately decided against making any moves before Friday’s 3 p.m. NHL trade deadline, whether it was the right decision or not.

With the Canadiens fighting for their first playoff spot since 2021, Hughes expressed trust in his current roster and wasn’t willing to pay the steep price in what became a seller’s market.

But just days later, the team played one of their least inspiring games of the season in Calgary, suffering a 1-0 loss to the Flames at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Following five straight wins, Montreal began its four-game road trip with two consecutive losses, although they did earn one point in an overtime loss to Edmonton.

With the playoffs slipping further away, it’s becoming clear that this team needs to get back to winning, plain and simple.

A random thought from the night: Josh Anderson has taken a beating this season. Despite being battered and bruised, he’s continued to play without missing a game. Meanwhile, Patrik Laine sat out against Calgary due to the flu. While we can’t know what’s going on with him physically, the stark contrast in the commitment of these two players is impossible to ignore.
