TEAM-NEWS: Vikings’ Shocking QB Announcement: J.J. McCarthy Opens Up About His Future and It’s Not What You Expect!

J.J. McCarthy made an appearance on the Up & Adams Show on Tuesday, revealing that the Minnesota Vikings have yet to officially name him their starting quarterback for 2025. Despite this, all signs point to him being the starter after Sam Darnold and Daniel Jones left in free agency, and with the Vikings not pursuing Aaron Rodgers.

McCarthy, who should be healthy and ready for the Vikings’ offseason workouts, shared his thoughts on the situation. Although he hasn’t been told he’s the starter, he’s perfectly fine with it and prefers to earn the role. “I never want that to be given to me,” McCarthy said. “I try to earn it every single day.”

While McCarthy’s comments might seem humble, it’s important to consider that the Vikings drafted him No. 10 overall last year with the intention of making him their future starter. This seems even more likely now after the team decided against bringing in Rodgers.

McCarthy also opened up about the Vikings’ handling of trade rumors earlier this month. Reports indicated teams were calling about McCarthy, but the Vikings were quick to shut those conversations down.

Vikings fans got a glimpse of McCarthy’s potential during his preseason debut last August, where he threw for 188 yards and two touchdowns. With Darnold and Jones gone, McCarthy’s path to the 2025 starting role became clearer. Although rumors about Rodgers joining the team surfaced, it’s clear the Vikings are sticking with McCarthy.

On the injury front, McCarthy shared that his knee is fully healed. After rehabbing a torn meniscus in his right knee during his rookie year, he feels “100 percent” and will be ready to take the field when the Vikings start their offseason program in April.
