The New York Jets have added some new talent to their roster.
Gang Green announced via social media that they’ve signed veteran defensive back Marquise Blair to the practice squad, while releasing offensive lineman Alec Lindstrom from the same squad.
Due to a wave of injuries expected to sideline 60% of their starting secondary, the Jets’ defense will face significant challenges in their upcoming game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to Jets contributor Jack Bell. Blair, 27, was drafted 47th overall in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft.
Over six seasons, he has played for three teams, including two stints with the Seattle Seahawks. Blair has participated in 26 games, making three starts and recording a total of 52 tackles, 36 of which were solo.
Despite entering the NFL with promise, Blair has yet to fully realize his potential.
This signing presents a low-risk, high-reward opportunity for the Jets. He will have the chance to learn the defensive schemes on the practice squad, and if he adapts quickly, he may rise in the ranks. Conversely, if he continues to struggle as he has in the past, his time in New York may be short-lived.
The Jets are dealing with several injuries that will test their depth and coaching strategies. Starting slot cornerback Michael Carter II missed practice on Wednesday and Thursday due to a back issue and has faced multiple injuries this season, including an ankle and a hamstring problem.
D.J. Reed, who has been performing as one of the league’s top corners, exited the Week 6 game against the Buffalo Bills with a groin injury and also did not practice on Wednesday or Thursday. He currently ranks third among corners in PFF’s defensive grading (86.6) and second in coverage grading (87.4).
The safety position is also facing difficulties, as starting safety Chuck Clark was placed on injured reserve due to an ankle injury and will miss at least four games.
