The New York Yankees have some significant gaps to address this offseason, with first base being a major priority. After parting ways with veteran Anthony Rizzo in free agency, the team is now exploring options at the position. Among the top available first basemen are New York Mets power hitter Pete Alonso and Arizona Diamondbacks veteran Christian Walker. Alonso is expected to secure a six-year, $174 million deal, while Walker is projected to sign a three-year, $66 million contract. FanSided’s Jacob Mountz recently advocated for the Yankees to target Walker, citing several reasons why he would be a smart addition.
“It appears the Yankees are strongly leaning toward signing Christian Walker,” Mountz wrote. “Walker is an elite defender at first base, has the potential to hit 30+ home runs, and most importantly, offers great value without a massive price tag.” Mountz went on to explain that the Yankees see Walker as an affordable yet impactful option. In 2024, Walker posted a .251/.335/.468/.803 line with 26 home runs in 479 at-bats, despite dealing with injuries. Over the previous two seasons, he had hit 36 and 33 home runs, respectively. Defensively, Walker has been outstanding, earning three consecutive Gold Glove awards.
