ARLINGTON — The Texas Rangers have been on a hot streak lately, with Marcus Semien playing a key role in their surge. That made a third-inning scare all the more unsettling.
Facing Braves starter Grant Holmes in a 2-2 game, Semien was simply trying to advance Corey Seager, who was on first. Instead, a 95 mph fastball from Holmes got away and struck Semien, creating a tense moment at Globe Life Field. There was no indication Holmes intended to hit him, but the pitch clearly shook up the veteran infielder.
Semien stayed down for several minutes while being examined by head trainer Matt Lucero, with manager Bruce Bochy and third base coach Tony Beasley joining them. Replays showed the pitch hit the protective flap of Semien’s helmet before glancing off his left cheekbone — which Semien appeared to rub as he sat up.
After being checked out, Semien put his helmet back on and walked to first base with Bochy and Lucero. He stayed in the game, moved to second on a wild pitch, and later scored on an Adolis García single.
Semien then took the field as usual for the top of the fourth, glove and hat in hand — a reassuring sign after a frightening moment.
