Unexpected Outcome: Vikings Get Bad News as $76 Million QB Sends 4-Word Message

As the Minnesota Vikings continue to evaluate their quarterback situation behind – and possibly even replacing – J.J. McCarthy, their options are narrowing. Despite some initial speculation about Jameis Winston joining the Vikings, he is no longer an option for the team.

Winston, who played for the Cleveland Browns in 2024, confirmed his next move with a simple, four-word message on March 21: “Start spreading the neWs [apple emoji]” on X.

Winston has now signed with the New York Giants, giving them a veteran option who could potentially start right away, even in Week 1. He could also serve as a mentor to a younger quarterback if the Giants decide to draft one.

Winston, the former No. 1 overall pick in 2017, has had a polarizing career. Known for his wild 30-touchdown, 30-interception season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Winston has thrown for 24,225 yards, 154 touchdowns, and 111 interceptions. He spent the 2020–2023 seasons with the New Orleans Saints before moving to the Browns.

Report: 49ers Inquiring With QB Jameis Winston

CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin had suggested Winston as a possible fit for the Vikings, considering his experience and leadership. “Carson Wentz is another big-armed journeyman who makes sense here, especially given his Midwestern roots,” Benjamin noted on March 21. “Winston is a touch younger with a touch more recent starting experience, though, and Kevin O’Connell might like his fiery leadership in the same room as the still-growing J.J. McCarthy.”

However, Sports Illustrated’s Will Ragatz offered a different perspective on Winston’s potential fit with the Vikings. He pointed out that while Winston is a recognizable name, his style might not mesh with the Vikings’ needs, both on and off the field. Ragatz emphasized that Winston’s aggressive, gunslinger mentality could make him too similar to backup Nick Mullens, and that his past legal issues could be a concern.

Despite settling his legal matters in 2016, Winston’s personal history has occasionally overshadowed his career. However, he has been praised for his leadership in the locker room since entering the NFL.
