The Minnesota Vikings faced multiple setbacks this offseason, including the loss of quarterbacks Sam Darnold to the Seattle Seahawks and Daniel Jones to the Indianapolis Colts. This has paved the way for J.J. McCarthy, the No. 10 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, to take over the starting role. Additionally, the team struggled to bring in new quarterbacks, having pursued Marcus Mariota, whose career earnings have surpassed $75 million, but ultimately losing out as he re-signed with the Washington Commanders. Despite these challenges, the Vikings have remained resilient and, on Wednesday, agreed to a new contract with 36-year-old safety Harrison Smith, ensuring he returns for his 14th season with the team.
This is significant for the Vikings, as Smith has been a key figure in their defense since being selected in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft. Over his career, he has made six Pro Bowls and been named First-Team All-Pro once. With 1,126 tackles, 48 tackles for loss, 12 forced fumbles, 37 interceptions (currently the NFL leader), 20.5 sacks, and 43 quarterback hits, he has been a consistent force on defense. Since 2018, Smith has also excelled in pass coverage, having been targeted 309 times, allowing 206 receptions, 2,396 yards, nine touchdowns, and a 72.7 passer rating.
