The Cleveland Browns face a pivotal offseason, with star running back Nick Chubb set to hit free agency. After battling multiple knee injuries, a foot injury, and other setbacks, Chubb’s future with the team is uncertain. While the 2022 All-Pro has been a cornerstone of the Browns’ offense, his inability to stay healthy might lead the team to let him walk. General Manager Andrew Berry acknowledged the situation, telling reporters, including Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, “We do expect Nick to hit the market. Obviously, his contract is up this year. We’ll meet with his reps and everything like that, but it’s something we need to work through over the next couple of weeks.” While Berry didn’t rule out a reunion, his comments suggest the Browns are weighing their options.
If Chubb departs Cleveland, several running back-needy teams could pursue him, including the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings, who finished 14-3 but fell in the Wild Card Round, are looking to take the next step. CBS Sports’ Garrett Podell believes Chubb could be a great fit in Minnesota, especially if he’s healthy. “Running back Aaron Jones is set to become a free agent after posting career highs in both rushing yards (1,138) and carries (255) in 2024. If Minnesota wants to add a more bruising runner who is a touch younger than Jones, Chubb could make sense in 2024 Coach of the Year Kevin O’Connell’s offense,” Podell wrote. With quarterback J.J. McCarthy likely entering his first full NFL season after a preseason meniscus injury, the Vikings may prioritize a strong run game.
Chubb’s health remains the biggest question mark. When healthy, the four-time Pro Bowler has consistently rushed for over 1,000 yards per season, including a dominant 2022 campaign where he amassed 1,525 yards and 12 touchdowns. However, injuries have plagued him recently, limiting him to just eight games in 2024 due to a foot injury. Chubb recently told On3 that he’s feeling good and is “trying to bounce back” from his setbacks. “I feel good, and I’ve definitely been through a lot the last two years,” Chubb said. “I’m healthy now. New season, I have a full offseason. I’m back to my training, so I’m feeling good and looking forward to getting back out there.”
If Chubb can stay healthy, the Vikings would be adding an elite talent to their backfield. While there’s inherent risk given his injury history, his potential upside and likely affordable price tag make him a gamble worth considering for a team aiming to contend in 2025.
