Over the past two weeks, both head coach Kevin O’Connell and general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah have consistently voiced their excitement about rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy. While speculation surfaced last month about the possibility of the Vikings pursuing Aaron Rodgers, the team’s leadership has remained publicly committed to their 2024 first-round pick.
According to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, who spent time at the NFL’s annual owners meetings this week, that support appears to be genuine. During an appearance on Get Up Wednesday, Graziano stated that all indications suggest the Vikings are fully committed to McCarthy moving forward.
“J.J. McCarthy is their guy,” Graziano said. “Sure, the Aaron Rodgers chatter could resurface, but from everything I heard, it would take something serious—like another major injury—for that to even be considered. Right now, the Vikings are going all-in on McCarthy, and the focus is on building the right pieces around him to help him succeed.”
In other words, any scenario involving Rodgers stepping in would likely require a catastrophic turn of events—similar to the 2016 situation when the Vikings brought in Sam Bradford following Teddy Bridgewater’s injury. Otherwise, the team appears ready to roll with McCarthy as the face of the future.
