The Vikings spent much of the offseason linked to several veteran quarterbacks, but ultimately made a different move during the NFL Draft. Instead of signing high-profile players like Aaron Rodgers, Daniel Jones, Joe Flacco, or Ryan Tannehill, the Vikings traded back in the draft with the Seattle Seahawks. Rather than gaining an extra pick, they moved back 30 spots and received backup quarterback Sam Howell in the deal. The Seahawks had drafted Jalen Milroe in the third round, making Howell the odd man out. Now, Howell joins the Vikings as a reliable backup to J.J. McCarthy.
This was a smart and cost-effective decision by Vikings GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah. Howell, with 18 career starts and a 5-13 record, brings experience despite his mixed performance (22 touchdowns to 23 interceptions). The Vikings are known for their interest in reclamation projects at quarterback, and Howell fits that mold perfectly.
Overall, it’s a solid, low-risk move for the Vikings that fills a need—without the drama of bringing in a player like Aaron Rodgers.
