Vikings’ Shocker: Daniel Jones Emerges as Secret QB Threat – Is Sam Darnold’s $40 Million Dream DOOMED?

The Minnesota Vikings are prepared to explore alternatives if retaining quarterback Sam Darnold becomes financially prohibitive. Head coach Kevin O’Connell, speaking after winning NFL Coach of the Year on February 7, highlighted Daniel Jones as a potential option, praising his fit in the Vikings’ system. O’Connell noted that Jones, who joined the team midseason after being released by the New York Giants, impressed teammates like Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison with his throwing ability during practices. While O’Connell acknowledged Darnold’s strong Pro Bowl season and right to test free agency, his endorsement of Jones signals the Vikings’ willingness to pivot if Darnold’s contract demands escalate.

Darnold, the top free-agent QB this offseason, could command $30–40 million annually, whereas Jones—after a disappointing tenure with the Giants following a $160 million deal in 2023—is likely to sign a backup role contract near $10 million, similar to Darnold’s 2023 deal. Jones reportedly chose Minnesota hoping to revive his career under O’Connell’s guidance, much like Darnold did.

The Vikings’ long-term focus remains on 22-year-old J.J. McCarthy, their 2024 first-round pick recovering from knee surgery. While McCarthy is expected to participate fully in offseason programs, the team prefers a veteran backup (like Jones or Darnold) to ease pressure on him. However, paying Darnold over $30 million as a backup seems unlikely if McCarthy is ready to start in 2025.

With Nick Mullens entering free agency and Brett Rypien as the only other rostered QB, Minnesota aims to secure an affordable, experienced option to support McCarthy’s development, emphasizing patience in their approach to his progression.
