KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WCYB) — As Tennessee football gears up for a championship-caliber season, the Volunteers held their first scrimmage of the 2025 spring season on Monday night at Neyland Stadium, marking the third week of practice.
The session included special teams work, live tackling, and thud periods with matchups of ones vs. ones, twos vs. twos, and threes vs. threes.
While much of the focus has been on improving communication and operations on both sides of the ball, the coaching staff has placed significant emphasis on integrating young players into the system. So far, they’ve been pleased with the progress of the newcomers as they move toward the Orange & White game.
“It was a solid night of work for the first scrimmage of the spring. Overall, I thought the operation from the coaches and players on both sides of the ball was strong,” said head coach Josh Heupel. “We need to clean up some pre-snap issues, but it was a pretty clean night overall. As your roster turns over, your young guys have to learn quickly, earn their roles, and seize their opportunities. These young players have approached it the right way. We’re still a long way from where we need to be, but if they keep putting in the effort every day, we have a chance.”
