Aaron Boone, the manager of the New York Yankees, signed a two-year contract extension on February 20, securing his role through the 2027 Major League Baseball season. The announcement came just one day before the start of Spring Training.
A former Yankees player, Boone has been a popular figure as manager since taking over in 2018. Known for his player-first approach, Boone is not afraid to stand up for his team, often leading to ejections by umpires. In fact, he led Major League Baseball in ejections by a manager in both 2022 and 2023.
Andrew Lynch, a senior finance and sales major, praised Boone’s leadership style. “Boone does a great job keeping the team together and communicates well with the players,” Lynch said. “He stays calm during tough times, which helps everyone stay focused. The players trust him because he supports them and has their backs when it matters.”
During his tenure, Boone has achieved significant success. He set a major league record by leading the Yankees to the postseason in each of his first five seasons as manager. Overall, he has guided the team to the playoffs six times in seven years and ranks seventh on the Yankees’ all-time list for most wins by a manager.
Despite his accomplishments, Boone has yet to deliver the Yankees their 28th World Series title. Last season, he won his first American League pennant as manager and brought the Yankees to their first World Series since 2009. The team came close to winning it all in 2024 but fell short in Game 5 of the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner and general manager Brian Cashman were eager to extend Boone’s contract, citing their satisfaction with his performance. The extension was finalized just before Spring Training began on February 21, ensuring Boone would continue leading the team’s pursuit of a championship.
While Boone has his supporters, his managerial style has drawn mixed reactions from Yankees fans. Many appreciate his ability to lead the team to the World Series in 2024, but others criticize him for failing to secure a title.
Joseph Marini, a senior finance major, shared his perspective on Boone’s mixed reception. “People complain because Boone hasn’t won a World Series since he’s been here, but we couldn’t have been closer last year,” Marini said. “If there was ever a time to fire Boone and not extend his contract, it was two years ago when we missed the playoffs. It’s hard to complain about extending a manager’s contract when he just took us to the World Series.”
As the 2025 season begins, Yankees fans hope Boone can guide the team to redemption and finally capture that elusive 28th World Series title. Whether loved or criticized, Boone’s passion for his players and his willingness to fight for them—often literally, through ejections—solidifies his place as the Yankees’ leader for years to come.
