**TAMPA, Fla. (AP)** — Yankees reliever Scott Effross has been diagnosed with a grade two left hamstring strain, manager Aaron Boone confirmed Thursday, as reported by New York media.
The 31-year-old side-arming right-hander exited his second spring training appearance after throwing just one pitch against the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday in Fort Myers. Boone revealed that Effross received a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection on Thursday and will need significant time to recover.
Effross, acquired from the Chicago Cubs on August 1, 2022, posted a 2.13 ERA in 12 2/3 innings over 13 appearances for the Yankees that season. However, his progress was derailed by Tommy John surgery on October 13, 2022, followed by back surgery on December 4 to repair a herniated disk.
After a lengthy recovery, Effross made his first minor league appearance of 2024 on June 19 with Class A Tampa. He was promoted to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre just eight days later, where he excelled, going 7-1 with a 2.78 ERA in 27 relief appearances. He struck out 28 batters and walked nine over 32 1/3 innings.
Effross rejoined the Yankees on September 1 when rosters expanded. In his first major league appearance since October 3, 2022, he gave up a fifth-inning home run to Jordan Walker in a 14-7 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. He made two additional appearances for the Yankees on September 4 and 27, finishing the season with a 5.40 ERA over 3 1/3 innings.
Over three seasons with the Cubs and Yankees, Effross has a career 2.89 ERA in 76 relief appearances and one start. He is set to earn an $800,000 salary this year.
