The New York Yankees, already dealing with key injuries this season—including Gerrit Cole, Luis Gil, Giancarlo Stanton, DJ LeMahieu, and Jazz Chisholm Jr.—may now face another major setback. Shortstop Anthony Volpe experienced a concerning shoulder issue during Saturday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays, describing the sensation as a “pop.” MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch reported that Volpe was in visible discomfort while trainers evaluated his shoulder on the field, sparking fears of a serious injury.
Although Volpe expressed hope afterward that the injury isn’t severe, the team is expected to conduct further testing. Should Volpe require time on the injured list, the Yankees may need to explore outside options to bolster the infield.
One potential move could involve bringing back utility man Jon Berti, who was part of the Yankees’ World Series run last year before signing with the Chicago Cubs. With Chisholm already sidelined, and current infield depth limited to Oswald Peraza, Jorbit Vivas, and Pablo Reyes, Conor Liguori of Athlon Sports sees Berti as a logical target. His versatility—having played second, third, and shortstop in his career—along with familiarity with the Yankees’ system, could make him a seamless fit if the team decides a reunion is necessary.
