Teams aiming for a World Series championship can never have too many reliable bullpen arms, and quality left-handed pitchers are especially valuable for their ability to seal games effectively. This is why left-handed reliever Tim Hill, who finished the 2024 season with the New York Yankees, is attracting significant attention from ambitious teams, even as free agency progresses. According to Pat Ragazzo of *Sports Illustrated*, the Yankees are interested in retaining the veteran southpaw, but they face competition from the New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Arizona Diamondbacks, all of whom are reportedly monitoring the 34-year-old pitcher. Additionally, the Colorado Rockies and Los Angeles Angels, despite being lower in the standings, have also expressed interest in Hill. Ragazzo noted that Hill and the Yankees have “mutual interest” in a reunion, but the Mets remain a strong contender, as Hill is reportedly open to joining the Queens-based team.
The Mets are poised to be the Yankees’ biggest rival in the race for Hill’s services, especially given their history of making bold moves, such as securing Juan Soto with an irresistible contract. With the Mets consistently looking to outmaneuver the Yankees, it wouldn’t be surprising if they succeed in signing Hill as well.
While the platoon advantage may not hold the same weight as it once did, it remains a significant factor in teams’ interest in Hill. As a left-handed pitcher, Hill excels against left-handed batters, posting a .643 OPS against them in 2024. However, right-handed hitters have had more success against him, batting .303 with a .704 OPS. Deploying Hill strategically in situations with multiple left-handed batters could benefit a contending team. That said, Hill’s career track record is relatively modest, with a 1.4 WAR (per Fangraphs) since his debut in 2018, which may temper expectations despite his current appeal.
