Many Minnesota Vikings fans speculated whether the team would bring former New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones back for the 2025 season to serve as the backup to young quarterback J.J. McCarthy. With so many ideas floating around about the Vikings’ quarterback situation, Jones’ potential return got lost in the mix. However, his recent signing with the Indianapolis Colts confirmed that he wouldn’t be returning to Minnesota.
New insights into the Vikings’ negotiations with Daniel Jones have recently come to light. When evaluating the fit for Jones, the Colts offer a lot of potential. With Anthony Richardson’s starting role not guaranteed for the entire season if healthy, there’s a chance that Jones could compete to win the job outright.
In Minnesota, McCarthy is firmly in line for the starting role. As a first-round pick in 2024, McCarthy will finally have the opportunity to show his skills once fully recovered from a knee injury that sidelined him during his rookie season.

NFL Insider Tom Pelissero recently shared a new perspective on the situation, revealing a different angle that may alter how fans view Jones’ decision. In a YouTube video with KFAN, Pelissero discussed the Vikings’ quarterback situation, including trade talks involving McCarthy, the Aaron Rodgers saga, and other quarterback-related matters.
Pelissero mentioned that the Vikings were competitive with their offer, reportedly offering Jones more money. However, once the team realized that Jones wasn’t fully committed to returning, they pulled the offer. Despite working with the Vikings previously, Jones’ uncertainty about re-signing speaks volumes about his feelings toward his time in Minnesota and his future there.
It’s possible Jones wasn’t willing to settle for a backup role in Minnesota while awaiting a potential starting opportunity elsewhere. The Vikings, knowing they couldn’t wait for him to change his mind, moved on.
Given the Vikings’ strong track record with quarterbacks and their reputation as one of the best franchises to work for, it’s surprising that Jones opted for a smaller pay cut to sign with the Colts instead. Jones may have seen his future in Indianapolis as a quicker route to playing time, rather than waiting to potentially grow into a role in Minnesota.
