Daniel Jones’ brief stint with the Minnesota Vikings might end this offseason. After being signed in November following his release from the New York Giants, Jones didn’t see any game action but served as the emergency third quarterback during the Vikings’ NFC Wild Card Playoff run. Now, the Cleveland Browns could present an enticing opportunity for the 27-year-old quarterback.

The Browns are in need of quarterback depth, especially with Deshaun Watson’s future uncertain after suffering a second Achilles tendon injury. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Cleveland is likely to draft a quarterback, potentially targeting Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders if the value aligns. However, Pelissero also noted that the Browns are expected to add a veteran quarterback, with Kirk Cousins and Daniel Jones emerging as possible candidates. Cousins, who has a prior connection with Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski from their time together in Minnesota, could be a cost-effective option if released by the Atlanta Falcons. Jones, meanwhile, could find a clearer path to starting opportunities in Cleveland.
Jones, who threw for 2,070 yards, 8 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions in 2024, has earned over $108 million in his career, per Over The Cap. While familiarity with the Vikings or a higher salary elsewhere might appeal to him, the chance to compete for a starting role with the Browns could be too good to pass up.
Cousins, however, remains a strong contender for the Browns due to his history with Stefanski. CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin highlighted Cousins as a potential one-year rental for Cleveland, given his likely affordable price tag after a disappointing season with the Falcons. While Atlanta might explore trading Cousins, his hefty contract and underwhelming performance make a release more probable, similar to the Denver Broncos’ decision to cut Russell Wilson in 2024.
Jones could also explore other options, such as joining the Los Angeles Rams. With Matthew Stafford’s future uncertain as he approaches 37, the Rams might look to develop a younger quarterback. Jones, who has shown flashes of potential, could benefit from working under Sean McVay, whose coaching tree includes Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell. Alternatively, Jones could remain in Minnesota to continue learning under O’Connell, though a direct move to McVay’s system might offer greater growth opportunities.
While ESPN’s Dan Graziano expects Stafford to return to the Rams, the team has faced quarterback uncertainty in recent offseasons. Adding Jones as a developmental option could provide valuable insurance. Ultimately, Jones’ next move will depend on where he sees the best chance to reignite his career, whether in Cleveland, Los Angeles, or elsewhere.
