Yankees LOCK DOWN Key Reliever Tim Hill in SHOCKING Move – Is This the Missing Piece for 2025?

The New York Yankees announced today that left-handed pitcher Tim Hill has been re-signed to a Major League contract for the 2025 season, including a club option for the 2026 campaign.

Hill, 34, appeared in 62 relief games split between the Chicago White Sox and Yankees during the 2024 season, compiling a 4-0 record with a 3.36 ERA over 67.0 innings pitched. He allowed 77 hits, 32 runs (25 earned), 19 walks, and 31 strikeouts, surrendering just two home runs. His 69.5% groundball rate ranked second among all Major League relievers (second in the American League), while his 0.27 home runs allowed per 9.0 innings placed third among left-handed relievers (second in the AL). Hill’s 67.0 innings pitched in 2024 marked a career high and ranked ninth overall (fourth in the AL).

Hill started the 2024 season with the White Sox, posting a 1-0 record and a 5.87 ERA in 27 relief outings (23.0 innings, 41 hits, 19 runs/15 earned runs, 10 walks, 13 strikeouts, 0 home runs). After being released by Chicago on June 18, he signed with the Yankees on June 20 and appeared in 35 games for New York, going 3-0 with a 2.05 ERA (44.0 innings, 36 hits, 13 runs/10 earned runs, 9 walks, 18 strikeouts, 2 home runs). Notably, he recorded four or more outs in 15 of his 35 appearances with the Yankees, compared to just four such outings in 27 games with the White Sox.

From his Yankees debut on June 20 through the end of the 2024 season, Hill ranked second among left-handed relievers (minimum 30.0 innings) in innings pitched (44.0, first in the AL), fourth in ERA (2.05, third in the AL), eighth in opponents’ slugging percentage (.281, fifth in the AL), ninth in opponents’ OPS (.549, fifth in the AL), and 10th in opponents’ on-base percentage (.267, seventh in the AL) and WHIP (1.02, eighth in the AL).

Over seven Major League seasons with the Kansas City Royals (2018–19), San Diego Padres (2020–23), Chicago White Sox (2024), and Yankees (2024), Hill has a career record of 20-14 with four saves and a 3.99 ERA across 382 relief appearances (322.1 innings, 326 hits, 176 runs/143 earned runs, 103 walks, 239 strikeouts, 30 home runs). Since 2018, his 28.9% inherited runners scored rate ranks seventh among all MLB relievers, and his 382 relief appearances are the fifth-most by a left-handed pitcher during that span. Hill has logged 60+ appearances in three seasons: 70 games with Kansas City (2018), 78 with San Diego (2021), and 62 with Chicago and New York (2024).

In postseason play, Hill has a 1-0 record with a 0.68 ERA over 16 relief appearances (13.1 innings, 9 hits, 3 runs/1 earned run, 3 walks, 8 strikeouts, 0 home runs) across three playoff runs (2020 and 2022 with San Diego, 2024 with the Yankees). During the 2024 postseason, he posted a 1.08 ERA in 10 appearances with New York (8.1 innings, 7 hits, 2 runs/1 earned run, 2 walks, 3 strikeouts).

A native of Mission Hills, California, Hill was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 32nd round of the 2014 MLB Draft out of Bacone College in Oklahoma. He was traded to the San Diego Padres on July 16, 2020, in exchange for right-hander Ronald Bolaños and outfielder Franchy Cordero. Hill later signed a Major League deal with the White Sox on December 28, 2023, before joining the Yankees midseason in 2024.
