Harrison Smith faced a pivotal choice ahead of the 2025 NFL season. The 36-year-old safety, who wrapped up his 13th season in 2024, had many wondering whether he would return for another year. A first-round pick (No. 29 overall) in the 2012 NFL Draft, Smith has been a six-time Pro Bowler and holds multiple franchise records, including first in pass defenses (96), first in solo tackles (822), and tied for fifth in interceptions (37).
On Wednesday, the Minnesota Vikings officially announced that Smith had agreed to a restructured contract, ensuring his return for a 14th season with the team. Fans celebrated the news, but many wondered why the veteran safety, who has nothing left to prove, chose to continue playing.
In a video shared by the Vikings on their YouTube channel, Smith explained his decision. Despite already having a storied career, he’s still driven by a strong desire to help take the team to new heights. “The leadership here, starting with the Wilfs and Kevin O’Connell, has been incredible,” Smith said. “Seeing what we’ve built, what we’re capable of, and knowing we’re on the verge of something special—it was important for me to come back and chase that this year.”
Smith’s return is a major boost for the Vikings, especially with the team undergoing significant changes in their secondary, losing several cornerbacks and fellow starting safety Camryn Bynum. His presence will bring veteran leadership and familiarity with Brian Flores’ defensive system to a squad that could look very different from the 14-win team of the previous season.
Despite his age, Smith has shown little sign of decline, and his continued strong play only adds to his already impressive resume. With his career achievements, including a potential future spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Smith is all but guaranteed a place in the Minnesota Vikings Ring of Honor.
